They are just wrong. Always seek the answers in the bible itself. If you want a correct or at least original knowledge of what Christianity means, regardless if you are a christian or not. This passage below is very important to understand. Remember that Christians are not suppose to hate neither to judge no body (see John because we are all sinners. So Christianity (base on the teaching of Jesus) is supposed to be based on tolerance and love. But unfortunately people use Christianity to judge, hate people, and make wars.

Mark 12:28-34 (New International Version)

The Greatest Commandment
28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b] 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c]There is no commandment greater than these."

You’re right. Christianity is a message of love, not hate.

I have never read or heard Sharpton or Jackson say to hate others, but if they have, they were sinning. I tend to hear people like Pat Robertson, Fred Phelps and James Dobson say stuff like that, and of course their perversion of the Gospel has nothing to do with the Christ of the gospels.

Whoever encourages people to hate in the name of a God of love, is ridiculously warped and far from the message of Christ.
