18 Is the Catholic Church seriously threatening to stop helping homeless people if gay marriage becomes legalized?

As you probably have already heard, gay marriage will most likely become legal in Washington DC later today. The Catholic Church is a desperate effort to promote their hateful, mean spirited agenda threatened to cut church programs helping the cities homeless if it is approved. Luckily, the law makers have refused to give into the Catholic church’s demands considering the Church’s programs are funded by government money. It’s funny that the church acts like the money is coming their own pocket.

In advance: congratulations to DC same sex couples! Happy marriages to everyone! :-)

    Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

    It seems yet again the Catholic Church would rather dictate its morality than display its humanity.

    Fine. Tax ‘em and be done with them, after you throw all the kiddie diddlers and their robed enablers into prison with short eyes tattooed on their foreheads.

    WRONG. In fact you have it backwards !! It is the Catholic Church who is threatening to stop their involvement in all social service programs! Please get you facts straight.

    Thank you for showing yet another example of how the Catholic Church is not Christian. What happens in their bedrooms may or may not be immoral, given your point of view. Overall, it’s all about the Benjamin’s baby!

    So I hear, yes. You can´t blame them: The Catholic Church is going to need every penny they can spare to settle as many sexual abuse cases in Ireland as they can.

    The Catholic Church is threatening to stop performing social charity work for the city if they would be forced to do things like provide health insurance for same sex couples under there employ.

    Keep in mind that that the 10 million dollars of it’s own money that the Church spends on these programs anually would still likely get spent, they woud just stop accepting government money. What would happen is that there would be less help available to homeless people untill DC could find another charity willing to take their money,

    The Church is not acting like the money is coming out of it’s own pocket. Quite the opposite. They are saying that they will stop taking goverment money if this law passes.

    I hadn’t heard that here in the UK (yet). Congratulations to the legislators in Washington DC on taking such a compassionate and charitable step. I understand that this District is the latest in a number of states that have taken this important step (shame on those wuho promulgated Proposition 8 in California).

    Human rights are important worldwide, and threats from religious groups and organisations – who probably represent only a minority of their members in this regard – should be treated with the contempt they deserve.

    Those Christians and other similar religious groups who consider homosexuality as sinful would probably refer to the following:

    Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

    Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

    Romans 1: A large part of the chapter describes male and female homosexuality as a punishment for worshipping other gods, and gay men and lesbians were justly punished (probably by execution as above).

    Corinthians 1:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

    The biblical laws and morality are of course barbaric, and highly immoral by today’s standards; and illegal in most modern democracies.

    Sexuality is partly genetic, but apparently mainly to do with the amount of testosterone available in the mother’s womb; so it’s determined before birth. The reason it’s right for gay people to be able to "marry" are Human Rights and the democratic rights to freedom of choice as long as it doesn’t adversely affect the rights of others.

    Those who want to deny these rights to their fellow humans are following barbaric beliefs. In my opinion, those who hold them are free to apply them to themselves, but not to others. The claim that they "hate the sin but love the sinner" is meaningless; denying others the right to live in ways that are fulfilling and make them happy, is effectively hating fellow humans.

    Yes and no. From an article in the New York Times:

    “Religious organizations and individuals are at risk of legal action for refusing to promote and support same-sex marriages in a host of settings where it would compromise their religious beliefs,” Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said in a statement. “This includes employee benefits, adoption services and even the use of a church hall for non-wedding events for same-sex married couples.”

    In short, I think what this means is that by continuing charitable services there, the church might face lawsuits for following its own set of policies. So, its like a political struggle between the Church and the DC government, and very possibly just a bluff. Common sense says that this is not a very Christian thing to do, but before reprimanding the church too harshly for their hypocrisy keep in mind that the church provides an enormous amount of charitable relief all around the world, and overwhelmingly the fruits of the Catholic Church are love, hope, and peace, despite its more publicized blemishes and scandels.

    I live in Britain’ and the council will not let a catholic couple adopt a child, if they do not accept tuition from the same couple to the child’ about gay living and homosexual education.

    This is a First Amendment issue, not an issue of ‘hateful, mean-spirited agenda.’ And it will go to the courts.
