Is it short for something or do the letters stand for something? I get the gist it’s a style but I would like to know the details of what makes someones look emo. Also, is it just a look or is there an attitude or lifestyle behind it?

*sigh
Emo started as a music genre (just like punk ,having bands like Dashboard Confessional and now, bands like Senses Fail).
It gradually fell into place as a style of clothing and even life style, too.
Emo does not mean cutters that are bisexual and all that crap.
The emo version today is just a sterotype, like being a jock, prep or nerd.
Emo are said to be cutters and bi,but they do not have to be.They do not even have to have the look (the look known as the emo look is actually called scene).
Emo is just short for emotional, nothing more.
People that are very emotional, and sensitive.
The sterortype suggests all the those things like crying every night while writing poetry:wearing tight pants ans shirts:dying your hair black :hating life and all tht,but it doesnt have to be.
It is a sterotype but just like any other sterotypes-many people of that sterotype are going to try to be all what that sterotype suggests them to be (confusing but yea,it answers the question).
EMO=EMOTIONAL
EMO WAS/IS STILL A MUSIC GENRE.
its a look and a hot one. i wear tighter pants, pierced my tongue and lip, and i have naturally straight hair that is kinda long and i get so much more pussy since i changed its crazy
Emo. Real emo. Is non-exsistant.
Emo is short for emotional hardcore. Hardcore being a sub-genre of punk music.
Emotional hardcore was short-lived but popular in the 80s. It wasn’t a fashion style or a lifestyle. It was simply a genre of music.
People who claim to be emo nowadays most likely don’t know the true background of the genre. They sure don’t know the bands.
Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, Panic At The Disco, etc. are not emo bands. They aren’t even punk bands, so how can they be emo?
FOB, MCR, HH are pop-punk bands. VERY different from punk.
PATD is what I would call a techno bands simply because of A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out had made use of a lot of techno.
True emo bands are: Rites Of Spring, Circle Takes The Square, Moss Icon, Texas Is The Reason and some others.
Hope this helped! =]
There are no wrong answers to this question. Like every other style it changes depending on the person. The style stays the same (usally) and same with the music. The look is mostly (for me) skinny jeans, black eyeliner, converus, and scene hair. The attitude is a touchy subject that has been discussed and debated about alot. Is acting depressed and cutting a wannabe move, cool or cry for attention? Is accually being depressed and cutting cool, pathetic, or sick? Depends on the indivial. If there is a lifestyle i don’t know. Maybe it’s a natural thing that emos blend into or is it something you have to gain? Most of the emo style is the look.
It’s definitely a style, but when someone says that someone is ‘emo’ they usually mean they have a very negative view of the world that they seem to revel in. If the person is just down, and appears like they want to be happy, then they are depressed. If the person is down, and wants to remain there, then they are ‘emo’
I think your asking about scene, because Emo, is a genre of music, short for emotional.
