Southern Baptist churches usually belong to the Southern Baptist Convention and they all more or less agree on their theology. They may also use books (especially in Sunday School) provided by the Convention.
Many Baptist Churches however, wish to remain unaffiliated with the Convention, even though their theology is probably almost identical. They typically just don’t like the idea of the SBC being able to stick their noses into the church’s business.
Baptists are "congregationalists" – which means that a very few doctrines are determined by the term "Baptist", that a few more are determined by the denomination (Southern Baptist), anywhere from a few to a lot are established by the congregation, and the rest are established by the individual.
SO, for example: there are King James Only Baptist churches. That can be quite different from a Baptist church that allows (or prefers) the NIV. There are "Young Earth Creationist" Baptist churches – which, again, can be quite distinctive from other Baptist churches.
SO – the doctrines can be very different. Indeed, the doctrines from one Southern Baptist Church to another **can** be very different, though usually they are fairly similar. There are several Southern Baptist churches in the city in which I live – it is not large enough to *need* more than one. (The two largest are about 8 blocks apart.) There are several congregations because people prefer the teachings of one over another – or the music, or the decor, or the people, or whatever.
